The Tournament   

The Mongrel Masters is the world's worst golf tournament with the world's worst golfers. The championship  was first held in December 1990 and has continued to be contested every year since.

The winner of the Mongrel Masters is awarded the coveted blue tweed jacket and the auld trophy, two of the least recognised symbols of golfing mediocrity.

Information for the 2007 Mongrel Masters follows;

Date of Tournament: 28 December 2007

Course: Palm Beach Golf Club: par 32; 2046 meters.

Location:  Beach Road, Palm Beach, NSW Australia

Getting there: Route 190 Bus

First Group tee off time:  5.00 am

Number of players invited:  50

Number of acceptances:  20

Tournament Patrons: Michael Campbell, Peter Lonard

Defending Champion: Boxcar Willey

Format: Medal play.

Qualifications: The Mongrel Masters is strictly a members only invitation Tournament. The following categories automatically qualify for an invitation;

  • Mongrel Masters Foundation Members, Life Members and Tournament Champions (Lifetime).

  • The first 10 players, including ties, in the previous year’s Mongrel Masters Tournament.

  • The 20 leaders from the Final Official Mongrel Masters Money List for the previous year.

  • The 20 leaders on the Mongrel Masters Career Money List for the previous year.

  • The Mongrel Masters Committee, at its discretion, also invites international players not otherwise qualified.

Purse: M$4 Million, Winners cheque $1,000,000

Rules: The winner of the Tournament shall be determined in accordance with medal play rules as approved by the Royal and Ancient Golf Club of St. Andrews, the local rules of the Palm Beach Golf Club and the tournament rules of the Mongrel Masters. Some rules unique to this tournament are;

SLEDGING: All forms of sledging, by-play, or acts that will test the mental resolve of a fellow competitor during a tournament is encouraged. 

DRESS: All players are required to wear bright, colorful and distasteful clothing when competing in the Mongrel Masters. All shirts must have collars and long socks are to be worn with walk shorts. Football jumpers and shorts are unacceptable attire.

DRINKING: Failure to consume the required number of beers on or before the 1st, 3rd and 5th holes is a serious breach of the Mongrel Masters By-Laws. 

ETIQUETTE All rules relating to etiquette as stipulated in the Rules of Golf are suspended for the Mongrel Masters.

PLAYING TOO SERIOUSLY: A player who by his dress, actions or demeanor during the Mongrel Masters, in the opinion of the Mongrel Masters Board, is playing too seriously and not within the philosophy of the Mongrel Masters will render himself liable to disqualification and suspension or expulsion at the discretion of the Mongrel Masters Board.

Playoff: Should there be a tie for first place, the winner of the Tournament will be determined by a sudden death play-off over as many additional holes as may be necessary to determine the final winner; provided that in the event that it is rendered impossible to have a sudden death play-off, the winner will be determined by a sudden death putt-off over as many holes on the practice putting green as may be necessary to determine a final winner. In other cases where there are ties, the money will be shared equally.

Player Registration: All players are required to assemble at the Palm Beach Golf Club Pro Shop at 3.20pm for registration, beer assignment, grouping and briefing.

Press Conference: All players are to avail themselves to the media for the post tournament press conference to be held on the ninth green following the final groupings signing of cards. Approximately 6pm

Awards Ceremony: The awards ceremony will take place at the Champions Dinner on the 28th December 2007 commencing 7pm at the Mongrel Masters Country Club. Dress code for the dinner is Black Tie.
