In only
his fourth start Lurch became the first international player to
win the Mongrel Masters. With a previous best of 9th position Lurch
took the field by surprise and once in the lead he was never going to
be stopped. He attributed his massive reversal in form to meditation and a diet of
potatoes and Guinness.
As predicted
Lurch's time at the top was short lived in 2002 once he left the cordial
surrounds and entered the jungle of the top group. In what can only be
described as one of the most pitiful title defenses ever mounted,
Lurch's score blew out bigger than Harold's stomach. His 55, was a
record twenty more than his previous years and this saw him
plummet to 20th, another one season turn around record not only for a
defending champion, but of all time.
