"A
disgrace" Lonard sums up the 1997 Mongrel Masters.
1997
Australian Masters Champion and Patron of the Mongrel Masters, Peter
'"Mossie" Lonard, lasted only two holes in his debut
appearance at the 1997 Mongrel Masters.
Sighting
sobriety and sanity Lonard needed no encouragement from his caddie
"Scrawny" Sumners to disqualify himself from the tournament
and walk off the course on the Third tee.
With the
handbrake preventing the Mossie attending the Sledge Ball the previous
night, there were stark contrasts in the blood alcohol levels of
Lonard and the rest of the field.
Although
disguised as a professional golfer, Lonard was easily recognised by
the huge number of public players banked up on the third tee. These
factors, combined with the specter of having to endure a further seven
holes with Noni Scanlon, justified Lonard's actions.
Lonard
returned the one figure appearance fee cheque with a short note.
"Noni, keep your money. Someone should be paying your members to
stay away from the golf course".
When asked
about the ordeal, Lonard answered.
"It
was an absolute disgrace. I thought the wineos from Matthew Talbert
Lodge had relocated to Palm Beach, when I saw this collection of
poorly dressed drunken bums staggering around the first tee
"I
suppose if I swung a club as bad as those guys I would want to be full
of juice while I play.
"It
saddens me to think that they have been publicly humiliating
themselves on the golf course for the last eight years.
"Why
they would want to wear such loud coloured clothing and bring
attention to themselves is bewildering? Have they no self
respect?"
