The
Rise and Fall of Ramrod Ramsey
"Today
the rooster, tomorrow the feather duster" is a saying that comes
to mind when you reflect on the career of Ramrod Ramsey.
In just
two years he has fallen from the pinnacle of golf, a duel Mongrel
Masters Champion, to the cesspit of ignominy, with his
disqualification in the 1996 Masters. In this expose, we talk to
Ramrod and reveal the agony and ecstasy of his rise and fall and
discover a man who is philosophical about his plight.
The name
Ramrod Ramsey was synonymous with the Mongrel Masters. After capturing
his second consecutive title in 1994 it was thought that a new era in
golf had been born. Ramrod’s swing and temperament for the Masters
was far superior to the others on the Tour. Ramrod was first and
daylight was second, and no one looked like arresting his grip from
the blue tweed.
That was
until he fell in love with a former model and glamour puss, Karen.
From that moment on, the "ice man" started to melt and
within twelve months had turned into a "slurpee".
Very few
know that Ramrod sacrificed his relationship to defend his title at
the 1995 Masters. Sunken and forlorn Ramrod explained his predicament.
" We
were going through a rough patch over Christmas and my fiancé wanted
me to pull out of the Masters. As soon as she made the ultimatum of
‘ its either the Masters or me’, my choice was made easy. It was
quite obvious that after all our time together that she did not
understand me, nor how important a part of my life the Mongrel Masters
was. So I packed my bags and left her in Queensland and played the
next day in the Masters."
"Given
the same situation, I would choose the Masters every time."
"
I don’t think our wives and girlfriends really understand the
significance of the Mongrel
Masters in our lives" continued Ramsey
"The
Mongrel Masters is not just a golf tournament, its an event that
reaches into the core of your soul and strangles it."
"It
is a form of ritual that arouses and releases the tribal and primitive
urges within all of us."
"Its
our last bastion where it is ok to be a bloke, and drink and swear. A
counter to the daily confusion we are confronted with by being an
Australian male post women's liberation and the merging of roles that
this has created" added the philosophical Ramrod.
So with
this type of shit spinning around in Ramrod’s head was it any wonder
that at the 1995 & 1996 Mongrel Masters he totally lost it?
No!
