Tips from the Top

How to play the bunker shot .

by Paulus Tenney

The bunker shot is one of the most important shots to master if you intend on being a Mongrel Masters Champion. The Palm Beach Links course is littered with bunkers. The largest stretching the entire eastern perimeter of the course.
So the chances are you will land in a bunker and you are going to be in deep shit.

On such an occasion I have developed what I call the 'pooper scooper' swing to get you out of the shit, when you land in it.

THE GRIP
I use the unconventional shovel grip. I hold the club as 1 would a shovel or spade. With hands spread apart and even pressure on all fingers.

THE STANCE
The stance is wide open, with the front foot pointing at the hole, while the back foot is parallel to the ball. Weight is distributed onto the front foot.

THE SWING
A fluent scooping motion with the club entering the sand right under the ball. The club must finish over your left shoulder.

The chances are that if you use this stroke you wont get the ball out of me bunker. I said at me beginning the secret to being a Mongrel Masters Champion is his bunker play. I am no Mongrel Masters Champion!
