Ramrod wins Masters in playoff.
In one of the
greatest finishes in golfing history, the 1993 Mongrel
Masters Champion was determined in a play off.
The stage was
set for a nail biting finish after Ramrod Ramsey sank a 2
metre putt on the ninth to force the playoff with Harold P
Ouvrier, who carded a remarkable 39.Harold P's score was
remarkable because his name never figured on the Leader
Board until his score card was handed in.
So a huge crowd assembled around the First Tee, to witness
the play off . There was an aura of expectation. History
was being written right before their eyes.
The toss of
the coin determined that Harold would have the honour. A
hush suddenly came over the vocal throbbing mass of people
as Harold stepped up to the tee. Then suddenly the silence
was broken with a shriek of" You're the man Harold!"
Harold gave a self assured grin to the crowd, made two
fluent practice swings of the club and addressed the ball.
Without further ado he gave the ball an almighty lick.
There were gasps of awe among the crowd as they witnessed
the ball travel long and straight down the fairway. It was
undoubtedly the greatest shot Harold P. had ever played.
People were heard to whisper "Is he a man or a machine?"
such was his composure.
So it was now
up to Ramrod to demonstrate whether he was made of the
right stuff to become the 1993 Mongrel Masters Champion.
He had just played a very taxing and grueling round,
enduring enormous amounts of crap and taunts from Noni.
Could he still keep his composure?
As Ramrod made
his way onto the tee it was apparent that he was being
swept up with the emotion of the play off. He seemed
agitated and ill at ease with himself. Beads of sweat were
noticeable upon his brow, and the crisp fluent swing which
got him to this position looked wrinkly and stiff.
He then addressed the ball, but soon became distracted and
walked away . Finally after some deep breathes he regained
his composure stepped up to the ball and give it a whack.
Contact between club and ball was not perfect. The ball
sailed high in the air, finally landing, to his good
fortune in the middle of the fairway, but some distance
behind Harold P's.
Both players
were mobbed by the massive crowd as they made their way to
their balls. Ramrod with the shorter of the two shots
reached his ball first. He knew that this was the shot
that could win or lose him the Championship, It must hit
the green. Without much fan fair he pulled out an 8 iron,
addressed the ball and hit it dead straight at the pin.
The ball landed on the green, pin high and less than 3m
from the hole. It was the shot of a Champion.
Harold P's
posture seemed to slump the moment Ramrod's ball hit the
green. The sweet smell of success that engulfed his
olfactory senses were now transformed into the ill winds
of the rotting stench of defeat.
It was up to Harold to meet the challenge before him. A
short pitching wedge onto the green was all that was
needed. Then it would be decided on the carpet.
A simple
scenario, a simple shot.
However,
Harold was now showing signs of altitude sickness. His
breathing
became deep and erratic and his skin was turning blue. He
had reached a height in his life that he had never
experienced before. The rarified atmosphere was causing
him to choke.
Harold addressed the ball and held his club like someone
squeezing the last bit of toothpaste out of the tube,
causing his knuckles to go white. He swung at the ball
with the style and grace of a lumberjack causing the ball
to travel in a horizontal trajectory off the shaft, rather
than the customary vertical trajectory. The path of the
ball made the spectators leap for cover in fear of being
mown down. As fate would have it no spectator was hit to
stop the ball reaching its plight, Out of Bounds.
Harold P's
dreams of winning The Mongrel Masters Championship were
lost
It was now a mere formality for Ramrod to two putt and
enter the annuls of golfing folk lore as the 1993 Mongrel
Masters Champion. He became the first person ever lo don
the blue tweed and have it actually fit him.
