Tournament organisers have announced that Cambo Campbell
will return to Palm Beach and tee up at Mongrel Masters XVIII
on 28 December 2007.
The 2002
Mongrel Masters Champion and 2005 US Open Champion is
looking forward to playing; “I had such a memorable time in
2002, so when Noni Scanlon told me the dates of this year’s
tournament and I saw they worked for me I had no hesitation
in telling him I was playing” said Campbell
Mongrel
Masters Chairman Noni Scanlon revealed how he was able to
convince Cambo to play. “ We caught up in Crans, Switzerland
for dinner when Cambo was playing at the Omega European
Masters, and did the deal over melted Swiss cheese on
potatoes and a couple of glasses of red.”
But it
seems there was more discussed at this meal than Cambo’s
commitment to play at Mongrel Masters XVIII.
Cambo and Noni spoke at length about the tournament,
its essence, and its uniqueness and future directions.
“When I
heard that the Mongrel Masters was now being played in the
afternoon I couldn’t believe it. I said to Noni that he was
placing in danger the tournaments major status. What makes
this a great event is that it’s different to the others and
you should accentuate the differences not diminish them. The
early morning start is one of those points of difference”
said Cambo
Hence one
of the main stipulations made by Cambo for his participation
was that the tournament returned back to its origins and
that means there will be a 5am tee off time for the 2007
Mongrel Masters. Noni Scanlon heeded Cambo’s advice and has
made it so.
Cambo
will obviously start as the hot favourite to win his third
major, however, it will necessitate overcoming the huge
hurdle of being restricted to using a Driver and 7 iron as
he did when winning as a rookie in 2002. But according to
the bookies Cambo winning Mongrel Masters XVIII isn’t the
bet with the shortest odds. That honour has been
given by the bookies to Red Colby on the spread for who will
be runner up. Having finished second for the past six
consecutive Mongrel Masters, Red is at the shortest odds
since Pharlap was galloping up and down the paddock.
