Selection for
Carrie Cup hotly
contested
2004 is a Carrie Cup year and selection for both the Northern
and Southern Hemisphere teams is the talk of all the players. So too
is when and where it will be played.
Following changes to the
qualification rules whereby representation is based upon residential
address and birthplace, the balance of power has now swung in
the Northern Hemispheres favour.
Team Captains will be
named in June, while Organisors have confirmed that the tournament
will be held in December and in Sydney, Australia, however, the date
and course is still yet to be announced.
The actual teams will be
announced by the Captains in October.
The
inaugural Carrie Cup between the Northern and Southern hemispheres was
held in beautiful conditions at the La Fayette Country Club,
Minneapolis, USA on Wednesday 14 August 2002 with the South trouncing
the highly fancied North by five strokes.
In an
unusual format each player competes in nine hole medal play. At the
end of the days rounds the best ball scores for each hole for the team
is recorded. The team with the lowest best ball aggregate round is
then declared the winner.
The Carrie
Cup was named after an extremely friendly and attractive barmaid at
the nearby Lord Fletchers bar which the players frequented before and
after the Tournament. The Cup was presented by its namesake to
proud 2002 Southern hemisphere captain Spuddy Cruddy Murphy.
