Southern Hemisphere win inaugural Carrie Cup

The inaugural Carrie Cup between the Northern and Southern hemispheres was held in beautiful conditions at the La Fayette Country Club, Minneapolis, USA on Wednesday 14 August 2002 with the South trouncing the highly fancied North by five strokes.

In an unusual format each player competes in nine hole medal play. At the end of the days rounds the best ball scores for each hole for the team is recorded. The team with the lowest best ball aggregate round is then declared the winner.

The Northern Hemisphere were strong favourites going into the tournament with a team that included Americans Bish Bishop, In Sain and Canadians Mountie Macleod and Groosie Groos.

Bish solidified his reputation as a tough competitor shooting the lowest round of the day. However the weight of his team was too heavy a burden to bare and the North combined terribly to only improve Bish's score on one hole.

Surprisingly for the South it was not heavy weights Noni Scanlon nor Harold P Ouvrier who steered the team to victory, but skipper Spuddy Cruddy Murphy, who shot the lowest round for the South. Five of Spuddy's holes were contributed to the teams total and the better combination of team scores led to a resounding 5 stroke defeat of the North.

The Carrie Cup was named after an extremely friendly and attractive barmaid at the nearby Lord Fletchers bar which the players frequented before and after the Tournament. The Cup was presented by its namesake  to proud Southern hemisphere captain Spuddy Cruddy Murphy.

Spuddy was elated not only with his teams performance but also with his own.

"What can I say this is the greatest day of my golfing career. History was made here today and I have my fellow team members to thank for that.  I am extremely proud of  them, and also ecstatic about my own performance in beating Noni Scanlon for the first time in living memory. I shall never forget this, nor shall I forget Carrie!"
